We forge Danish dictation that just works.
Vara is a small app with one job: to turn your speech into finished text, wherever you type on your Mac. You hold a key, say what you mean, let go — and the text lands right where your cursor is. No windows to switch between, nothing to paste, no cleanup afterwards.
We built Vara because we were tired of two things: dictation costing a subscription every month, and most tools treating Danish as an afterthought. So we made our own.
The name
Vara is named after Vár, the Norse goddess who hears every promise and every word that is spoken. That is the whole idea: something that listens carefully and keeps what you say. The rest of the craft is forged — raw speech in, clean text out.
Who is behind it
Vara is built in Denmark by Brokk & Sindre ApS — named after the two dwarven smiths of Norse myth who forged the gods’ finest treasures. We are a small workshop building software we want to use every day. Read more about us at brokk-sindre.dk.
What we believe
Dictation should not cost a subscription. With a free Groq key, Vara costs you nothing.
Danish should be first-class, not an English tool guessing at æ, ø and å. Lock the language or let Vara detect it automatically.
You should own your own words. If you want everything to stay on your Mac, WhisperKit transcribes right on the machine — no key, no internet — so neither audio nor text leaves your Mac.
How far we are
Vara is in private beta right now. We let testers in as small groups so we can actually listen and adjust. Want to help shape it? Join the waitlist — or write to us directly. We read everything.
